    Regional economic coordination and implications for planning: the case of Zimbabwe in SADCC

    A conference paper on regional economic co-operation in the SADC with emphasis on economic planning in Zimbabwe.With the international economic crisis, the drought and food production crises in Africa, all of the economic indicators show a negative growth and a decrease in the quality of life of most African peoples. After two and* one- half "development decades" of the United Nations, the international community and the individual states have clearly failed in their goal.. Even large and diversified economies like Brazil and Mexico, with definite indicators, ox economic growth, are the largest debtors, "National" development no longer seems possible. Further, individual states find the colonial legacy of underdevelopment too difficult to transform in the period of economic crisis. Even countries like Angola and Mozambique, who won national revolutions and began social revolutions to transform production relations, have found the inherited economic linkages an inimical barrier to development.

    Fluorescence-based biosensing of zinc using carbonic anhydrase

    Measurement of free zinc levels and imaging of zinc fluxes remains technically difficult due to low levels and the presence of interfering cations such as Mg and Ca. We have developed a series of fluorescent zinc indicators based on the superb sensitivity and selectivity of a protein, human apo-carbonic anhydrase II, for Zn(II). These indicators transduce the level of free zinc as changes in intensity, wavelength ratio, lifetime, and/or anisotropy; the latter three approaches permit quantitative imaging of zinc levels in the microscope. A unique attribute of sensors incorporating biological macromolecules as transducers is their capability for modification by site-directed mutagenesis. Thus we have produced variants of carbonic anhydrase with improved affinity for zinc, altered selectivity, and enhanced binding kinetics, all of which are difficult to modify in small molecule indicators.Peer Reviewedhttp://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/44187/1/10534_2004_Article_355471.pd

    Wildtype epidermal growth factor receptor (Egfr) is not required for daily locomotor or masking behavior in mice

    BACKGROUND: Recent studies have implicated the epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) within the subparaventricular zone as being a major mediator of locomotor and masking behaviors in mice. The results were based on small cohorts of mice homozygous for the hypomorphic Egfr(wa2 )allele on a mixed, genetically uncontrolled background, and on intraventricular infusion of exogenous EGFR ligands. Subsequenlty, a larger study using the same genetically mixed background failed to replicate the original findings. Since both previous approaches were susceptible to experimental artifacts related to an uncontrolled genetic background, we analyzed the locomotor behaviors in Egfr(wa2 )mutant mice on genetically defined, congenic backgrounds. METHODS: Mice carrying the Egfr(wa2 )hypomorphic allele were bred to congenicity by backcrossing greater than ten generations onto C57BL/6J and 129S1/SvImJ genetic backgrounds. Homozygous Egfr(wa2 )mutant and wildtype littermates were evaluated for defects in locomotor and masking behaviors. RESULTS: Mice homozygous for Egfr(wa2 )showed normal daily locomotor activity and masking indistinguishable from wildtype littermates at two light intensities (200–300 lux and 400–500 lux). CONCLUSION: Our results demonstrate that reduced EGFR activity alone is insufficient to perturb locomotor and masking behaviors in mice. Our results also suggest that other uncontrolled genetic or environmental parameters confounded previous experiments linking EGFR activity to daily locomotor activity and provide a cautionary tale for genetically uncontrolled studies

    Engagement with care, substance use, and adherence to therapy in HIV/AIDS

    Engagement with care for those living with HIV is aimed at establishing a strong relationship between patients and their health care provider and is often associated with greater adherence to therapy and treatment (Flickinger, Saha, Moore, and Beach, 2013). Substance use behaviors are linked with lower rates of engagement with care and medication adherence (Horvath, Carrico, Simoni, Boyer, Amico, and Petroli, 2013). This study is a secondary data analysis using a cross-sectional design from a larger randomized controlled trial (n = 775) that investigated the efficacy of a self-care symptom management manual for participants living with HIV. Participants were recruited from countries of Africa and the US. This study provides evidence that substance use is linked with lower self-reported engagement with care and adherence to therapy. Data on substance use and engagement are presented. Clinical implications of the study address the importance of utilizing health care system and policy factors to improve engagement with care

    Early inflammatory cytokine expression in cerebrospinal fluid of patients with spontaneous intraventricular hemorrhage

    We investigated cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) expression of inflammatory cytokines and their relationship with spontaneous intracerebral and intraventricular hemorrhage (ICH, IVH) and perihematomal edema (PHE) volumes in patients with acute IVH. Twenty-eight adults with IVH requiring external ventricular drainage for obstructive hydrocephalus had cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) collected for up to 10 days and had levels of interleukin-1α (IL-1α), IL-1β, IL-6, IL-8, IL-10, tumor necrosis factor-α (TNFα), and C-C motif chemokine ligand CCL2 measured using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. Median [IQR] ICH and IVH volumes at baseline (T0) were 19.8 [5.8–48.8] and 14.3 [5.3–38] mL respectively. Mean levels of IL-1β, IL-6, IL-10, TNF-α, and CCL2 peaked early compared to day 9–10 (p < 0.05) and decreased across subsequent time periods. Levels of IL-1β, IL-6, IL-8, IL-10, and CCL2 had positive correlations with IVH volume at days 3–8 whereas positive correlations with ICH volume occurred earlier at day 1–2. Significant correlations were found with PHE volume for IL-6, IL-10 and CCL2 at day 1–2 and with relative PHE at days 7–8 or 9–10 for IL-1β, IL-6, IL-8, and IL-10. Time trends of CSF cytokines support experimental data suggesting association of cerebral inflammatory responses with ICH/IVH severity.     Island dynamics and anisotropy during vapor phase epitaxy of m-plane GaN

    Using in situ grazing-incidence x-ray scattering, we have measured the diffuse scattering from islands that form during layer-by-layer growth of GaN by metal-organic vapor phase epitaxy on the (101⎯⎯0)(101¯0)(101¯0) m-plane surface. The diffuse scattering is extended in the (0001)(0001)(0001) in-plane direction in reciprocal space, indicating a strong anisotropy with islands elongated along [12⎯⎯10][12¯10] [12¯10] and closely spaced along [0001][0001][0001]. This is confirmed by atomic force microscopy of a quenched sample. Islands were characterized as a function of growth rate F and temperature. The island spacing along [0001][0001][0001] observed during the growth of the first monolayer obeys a power-law dependence on growth rate F−nF−nF−n, with an exponent n=0.25±0.02n=0.25±0.02n=0.25±0.02. The results are in agreement with recent kinetic Monte Carlo simulations, indicating that elongated islands result from the dominant anisotropy in step edge energy and not from surface diffusion anisotropy. The observed power-law exponent can be explained using a simple steady-state model, which gives n = 1/4
